Release Review: Ancient Ascendant – Echoes and Cinder

Britain’s Ancient Ascendant are a band I had no exposure to until I sat down to listen to their their release, Echoes and Cinder. When I first listened to the album I was a bit underwhelmed. On another listen to the album it wasn’t as bland and uninspiring as I thought the first time and on future listens it’ll probably grow, but aside from a few songs I doubt I would listen to the album in full again. The album’s first two tracks, ‘Crones to the Flames’ and ‘Patterns of Bane’, are bog-standard death metal songs. We’ve heard them before in some form or another, they’re not terrible but when listening I couldn’t help but hear I’ve heard it all before. Third song ‘Riders’ though steps thing up a notch with some great riffs and songwriting. But it took until track six ‘To Break the Binds’ for the album to maintain that level of quality again. In some ways this is an album of two halves, as the second half is vastly superior to the first.
